As a fan of action games, I had high hopes for Planetside, a first-person shooter game in which you control the fighting directly. Recent persistent-world games have moved beyond the role-playing genre. But as I fought or just wandered around aimlessly, I just wasn't having much fun. Galaxies had some cool ideas: in my chosen profession, entertainer, I could go to a cantina and join a jam session to boost my morale the music and dancing there were rather entertaining. This is a hugely popular style of combat based on the Dungeons and Dragons model, but I fail to understand why people consider it fun. If you die, you must fight some smaller creatures to increase your strength and skill. Sometimes you can toss in a special attack, but over all it is a rather passive experience. You click on a monster to attack it, then watch the battle unfold. Galaxies uses a click-and-watch approach to combat that is typical of persistent-world role-playing games. For example, if you vanquish an opponent with a gun, you become a better marksman. These games involve character-building, in which your skills increase with experience. Most persistent-world games are role-playing games like Sony Online Entertainment's Star Wars Galaxies.
Yet I keep trying, looking for the compelling experience that others claim to find in these games. Some have kept me mildly entertained for a few days I gave up on others within hours, and not one has had a world in which I would want to live. I have tried without success to enjoy persistent-world games. As you wander through these worlds, you see other online players, with whom you can trade, fight or simply chat. These are the online universes populated by virtual representations of gamers whose likenesses and skills persist from one game session to the next. I am exploring the latest persistent-world games, also referred to as massively multiplayer online games. Interesting places to visit, but would I want to call any of them home? Later I find myself wandering through the deserts of ancient Egypt, then through a colorful cartoon world where gray-skinned businessmen attack me with hot air and double talk. I am walking through an alien forest under the pink twilight sky of a world constantly at war.
